Chasing football dream

Chasing football dream

Sometime ago, Kirtipur was a hub of football in southern region of Kathmandu valley. There was a lot of football craze as several football tournaments were used to be organized. After conversion of TU football ground into cricket pitch, the football activities had declined drastically at Kirtipur.

However Kirtipur’s football dream has been again envisioned by establishment of “Junior Football Training Center”. The center was launched by young football enthusiasts with an objective to produce quality football players.

It’s been four months the training started and there are 71 boys and 3 girls trainees whose age ranges from 8 to 13 years. There are five training sessions each week at Kirtipur football ground, Nayabazar.

One of the trainees- Kashish (12) who plays striker and has not missed a single session says “My favorite player is Messi and I dream to play for national team someday”. He added his skills have been improved since he joined the training and has been selected in his School’s junior football team as well. Prashana (13) also aims to be striker and says he has learned many techniques in past months of the training. Moreover, he gets inspiration and support from his parents to play football.

Other juniors like Kashish and Prashana also have similar views and are grateful to their coaches.

There are three senior coaches and three assistant coaches. Among them, Echi Maharjan holds license accredited by Asian Football Association. The team of coaches works hard every week to make the sessions less hectic, more fun and improving juniors’ skills. In a meantime, they document performance of every trainee.

This hard- work has also got paid. All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) has recently given affiliation to training center under FIFA grassroots program. All kids are excited as they will be participating on grassroots festival on December 2014. They will also take part in grand festival at 2018 where players will be selected for ANFA academy.

Purna Man Singh, active member of Kathmandu District Football Association who is closely monitoring the training says “We are happy to see the improvements and enthusiasm of kids. We wish some of them would qualify for ANFA academy”.

Besides all these enthusiasm, hard- work there are some challenges ahead as well. One of them is lack of funding although some local sponsors like Kirtipur Futsal, Sasa Restaurant, Little Dolphin Swim School and ANFA are supporting with some fund and kits. Another biggest problem is the condition of the football ground. The center has spent a lot of its money and time to improve the quality, but not much could have been done.
