A month long recitation of Swasthani Brata Katha begins from Poush Shukla Purnima and at Hanumanghat, Bhaktapur, Madhav Narayan festival starts from the very day. The festival is a month long celebration devoted to goddess Swasthini and Lord Shiva. During the festivity, people take religious fast, bath in the holy rivers and read the pious Swasthani book, a chapter of which is recited by priests or householders to the gathered family on a daily basis.

Every year thousands women and male devotees visit Hanumanghat during the festival. Devotees wrapped up in white clothing roll on the banks of Hanumante river, take dip in holy river, sprinkle water to the crowd and offer water to different deities, doing as such brings happiness and prosperity to the family, the worshippers believe. Married women undertake fast for longevity of their husbands and family members whereas unmarried fast for a caring and loving partner.
